Base-Building Guide: Build a System, Not a Pile

A strong base converts resources into options. Every facility should support income, capacity, production, defense, information, or recovery—and its placement should help the rest of the network.

Protect the dependency chain

List the structures that your next strategic step depends on. In Frontline, the chain moves through the Flux Refinery and Field Barracks before the Vehicle Foundry becomes useful. If a wave destroys an active prerequisite, the interface truthfully reflects what has relocked and what must be rebuilt.

Leave room for movement

Facilities need space around them for unit paths, rally points, repair access, and defensive positioning. Tight clusters shorten response distance but amplify congestion. Use small functional groups with lanes between them rather than one solid block.

Balance income, power, and force capacity

Production without income empties a reserve. Income without production cannot answer pressure. Both become liabilities during a brownout or when force capacity is exhausted. Check the resource bar before queuing the next expansion and preserve a repair or emergency-production reserve.

Defend the target the enemy selected

Frontline’s threat monitor identifies a committed wave target after its plan is known. Use that information: reposition the army, set an appropriate patrol route, and Fortify the facility if 160 flux is worth the temporary 260-point shield. Do not spend the reserve automatically when the wave can be intercepted safely.

Make recovery explicit

When a structure falls, rebuild the smallest missing link first. Restore power if systems are constrained, income if expansion is locked, or the producer that matches the unit you need. Salvage idle completed structures only when their build space and refund are worth more than their remaining strategic option.
